Field Care

Bird Mount Field Care

• Choose the bird to be mounted carefully. Broken wings and legs, birds retrieved by dogs, immature and pin feathered birds can dramatically affect the quality or pose of the mount.

• When confident that the bird is mountable, carefully tuck the head under a wing and wrap tightly in saran wrap or length of panty hose stocking. Place in a plastic bag and tightly roll up to remove as much air as possible. Wrap in a second plastic bag and freeze. Deliver to the taxidermist as soon as possible.

• Upon shooting a turkey, the hunter should make every attempt to contain the bird, not letting it flap around thus loosening feathers. Do not field dress the bird, keep it dry and cool in an ice chest and deliver as soon as possible.
